Growth Form and Foliage
  • Evergreen shrub tree with a dense, rounded or cylindrical crown; it can grow up to 20 m tall.
  • The bole can be up to 40 cm in diameter, often branching from low down and often fluted.
  • Leaves have leathery skin, it is 10 - 15 mm long and 5 - 10 mm wide.
Flowers
Flowers are small, borne in clusters, measuring about 7 mm in diameter.
Fruits
The black fruit is a globose to ellipsoid drupe with a hairy, leathery skin, it is 10 - 15 mm long and 5 - 10 mm wide.
Habitat
  • Moist deciduous and evergreen forests.
  • Also commonly scattered in secondary forests at elevations from sea level to 600 m.
Ethnobotanical features
  • The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of fibre and wood.
  • A decoction of the roots is used in the treatment of coughs.
  • The wood is light in weight, strong and elastic. It is used for indoor construction and is suitable for making tool handles.
  • The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal.
