Growth Form and Foliage
  • It is a medium size to large tree up to 45 m tall.
  • The bole is straight, cylindrical and up to 105 cm in diameter, sometimes buttressed.
  • Stipules absent. Leaves alternate, simple, penni- to tripli-veined, glabrous.
Flowers
Flowers ±4 mm diameter, white-yellow, placed in panicles.
Fruits
Fruits ±10 mm diameter, green-grey, fleshy drupe placed on slightly swollen flower base.
Habitat
This species occurs commonly in lowlands to montane forests, on both fertile and poor soils, usually in well drained areas.
Ethnobotanical features
  • Essential oils are obtained by steam distillation.
  • The wood is used for general construction while Safrol, a scent for soaps is extracted from the wood.
  • The bark is used in flavouring food.
