Growth Form and Foliage
  • An evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 15 m tall.
  • The straight bole is short and branches almost at the base.
  • Leaves are simple, alternate and distichous, narrow-oblong, lance shaped, tip tapering, base pointed, margin finely toothed.
Flowers
  • Flowers are arranged in a 2 - 5 flowered inflorescence, in leaf-axils or along leafless twigs, unisexual. Flower-stalks are 2 - 3 mm, velvet-hairy.
  • Petals are oblong to ovate, 3.5 - 4 mm; sepals 2 - 2.5 mm, somewhat leathery, tip blunt.; stamens 15 - 20; anthers not locellate.
  • Female flowers: slightly smaller than males; ovary spherical, hairless.
Fruits
Fruit berry up to 0.6 cm diameter, globose-ovoid, usually indehiscent with persistent style.
Habitat
Hill forests at elevations of 1,500 - 2,400 m.
Ethnobotanical features
  • The leaves are used to adulterate tea (Camellia sinensis).
  • Medicinal: A decoction of the leaves is used as a treatment for cholera, diarrhoea and other stomach-diseases.
  • The leaves are applied as a poultice on skin eruptions.
