Growth Form and Foliage
- It grows to 40 m high.
- Its bole is stout, columnar, measuring up to 150 cm in diameter and with thick buttresses.
- he leaves are sometimes peltate in saplings, obovate to broadly ovate or cordate, measuring 7 - 25 cm by 4 - 22 cm and palmately 3 - 9-veined.
Flowers
- Flowers twice a year.
- The inflorescence is long and simple while the male ones are with short side-axes.
- The male flowers are with 9 - 11 stamens while the female flowers are with 2 - 3-celled ovary and a stigma 1.5 mm wide.
Fruits
Mature fruits are present 2 - 3 months after flowering.
Habitat
A pioneer in disturbed habitats and open places of undisturbed mixed Dipterocarp, tropical lowlands, freshwater swamps and at elevations up to 900 m.
Ethnobotanical features
- Medicinal: The bark is used to cure dropsy and the roots are applied to injuries.
- Timber for clogs, pattern making, trays, furniture parts, plywood chests, low grade coffins, disposable chopsticks, matchboxes, match splints, drawing boards, black boards and toys.
