Growth Form and Foliage
  • Mid-canopy tree growing up to 35 m tall.
  • The bole can be up to 50 cm in diameter.
Flowers
  • Male inflorescences c. 1 cm long.
  • Female inflorescences 0.1 - 0.5 cm long.
Fruits
The fruit is a fleshy berry about 27 mm long and is edible.
Habitat
Undisturbed mixed dipterocarp forests at elevations up to 1,600 m. Mostly on hillsides.
Ethnobotanical features
  • A commercial source of ebony.
  • Harvested for edible fruit and producing high quality furniture.
  • A decoction of the bark is drunk to treat coughs.
  • Small trees containing little or no heartwood are used locally.
