Growth Form and Foliage
- Mid-canopy tree growing up to 35 m tall.
- The bole can be up to 50 cm in diameter.
Flowers
- Male inflorescences c. 1 cm long.
- Female inflorescences 0.1 - 0.5 cm long.
Fruits
The fruit is a fleshy berry about 27 mm long and is edible.
Habitat
Undisturbed mixed dipterocarp forests at elevations up to 1,600 m. Mostly on hillsides.
Ethnobotanical features
- A commercial source of ebony.
- Harvested for edible fruit and producing high quality furniture.
- A decoction of the bark is drunk to treat coughs.
- Small trees containing little or no heartwood are used locally.
