- It is an erect to scrambling shrub or small tree, up to 13 m high and 15 cm diameter at breast height.
- Leaves have papery to slightly leathery leaf blades that are elliptic, drop-shaped to round, and 4 - 17 by 2 - 11 cm. Its veins are prominent below.
Flowers
- Flowers are scented, giving off a faint musty smell.
- Its flowers grow in clusters of 2 - 6.
- Its male flowers are cream to greenish or yellowish and 0.6 - 1 cm across, while its female flowers are reddish-green and up to 12 mm across.
Fruits
- Dull dark reddish to black, 0.7 - 1.3 by 0.6 - 1.1 cm, and grow in clusters of 1 - 5.
- Its seeds are yellow to brown, somewhat egg-shaped, and 6 - 8 by 3 - 6 mm.
Habitat
- Secondary forests.
- Near wet places such as rivers, swamps, seashores and mangroves.
Ethnobotanical features
- It acts as a food plant for butterflies.
- The wood from the Bridelia Tomentosa is suitable for baskets, carts, wheels and tool-handles.
- Fruits are eaten and leaves are used with other herbs in Malaysia to treat stomach aches and high fever while roots are used in the treatment of epidemic influenza.
